Cepums posted an update in the group Poor or Disabled Preppers If you learn to can foods - you can make your own reserves basicly by the prices of raw materials insted of prices of products those materials are turned in by others. Internet is filled with recipes from tomatoe sauces to jams and salads. And you can do that at the end of summer and at the begining of autumn when the prices for vegetables and fruits in markets are usualy lower. If a sack of potatoes will be useles after a winter, a gallon jar of apple juice can stay in dark, cool place for years.
I myself in our family can all kinds of vegetable and fruit goods. I'm a bit twitchy about canning meats.. The risk of poisoning with self canned meats is too high the way i see it. But i work on learning to preserve meats in other ways - smoking, salting.
Reserves made during summer then save money during winter that can be used to pay for heat or for preparing for summer time - buying tools and other inventory you'll need.
Don't just look where to buy things cheaper - learn to make themsel
